Flower-ishing

bloom, happiness, positive vibrations

Roni Rincon's avatarThe Chronicles of Roni

In brief, flourishing is what one makes of it. Scrolling through the internet one can find definitions upon definitions but in reality, flourishing never stops growing and I mean that both metaphorically and figuratively. Surprisingly, psychologists such as founding father Dr. Martin Seligman have tried to officially define this process of growth in one’s life but the simple conclusion is ‘take whatever makes you happy and run with it.” It is hard to follow a psychological process like this one because it will probably change in ten years. Unlike previous definitions, flourishing is a measure of happiness and that only because once one starts to measure the labeled negative emotions that are when one introduces unnecessary attention to the complications in one’s life. If there is one point in this piece to take home, it should be to build a foundation that has always made you feel invincible and rely…

What does it mean to practice self-love?

Megan Jane's avatarThe Uplifting Blog

LoveFrom the very first day that each of us came into this world, we’ve been repeatedly fed the message, through bedtime stories, books, movies, music and the wisdom of our loved ones, that love is a powerful thing.

So cliché, right? Because it’s obvious. It goes without saying. We’ve all felt the impact that love can have, the difference it can make in our lives, and we’ve seen what it’s done throughout history.

Look at the Chinese couple, Liu Guojiang and the Xu Chaoquing that chose to live in a cave because the world didn’t want them to be together. Or the Prince, Shah Jahan, that spent 22 years building one of the most stunning pieces of architecture, the Taj Mahal, in memory and out of love for his dead wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

These are beautiful stories, though have you ever contemplated why individual stories of self-love…

Two benefits to avoiding technical jargon and concepts

Simplicity, Technology

Michael Wilson's avatarDigital Business

Technology can very complex. Like every profession, technologists use lots of acronyms and jargon. As digital executives, we may succumb to the temptation to get overly complex. That is natural because much of what we do is complex.

So, after coming up with ideas, we need to develop simple messages and language to test our ideas with folks from the business.

Avoiding all technical jargon and concepts has two benefits:

  • First and most important, it forces us to think clearly and crisply
  • Second, simplicity increases the chances that the business audience will understand the intent and see the benefits.

Does the average marketing person understand what people in technology are saying? If not, we need to go back to the drawing board.

There is way too much complexity in the world. As digital executives, we can drive to simplicity that benefits everyone.

What is “Fake News”?

disinformation, Facebook, fake news, internet, Internet Research Agency, misinformation, post-truth

jaredmwright's avatarThe Digital Sociology blog

The now-popular buzzword “fake news” gets thrown around a lot today by many different players. In fact, it has become so central to our current political issues that Oxford Dictionaries designated “post-truth” as the international word of the year in 2016. But what does “fake news” actually mean? For a term with so much importance, there is surprisingly little agreement on its definition.

Scholarship thus far has primarily focused on breaking down different meanings of the term based on distinguishing between “truthful” and “false” information. This has most commonly been done by delineating between the concepts of misinformation and disinformation. The key difference between these two terms is the intentionality behind them. Specifically, misinformation is typically understood as false information that is spread unintentionally, such as a social media user sharing a false story or rumor without realizing that it is untrue. Disinformation, in contrast, is information…

The Fixer

Driver’s License, Fun, Humor, humorous, Missionary, missions, Philippines

Barbara Wilkinson's avatarTHE MEDIOCRE MISSIONARY

“What’s a ‘fixer?’” I asked my husband as we sat sweating together under the relentless sun with the hundreds of other unfortunate souls renewing their driver’s licenses. Bored to tears from the hours of waiting and miserable from the heat, I had taken to scrutinizing every detail of my surroundings. (This was pre- smart phone or tablet days, and the sun was too glaring to be able to read the paperback I’d brought along.) A handwritten notice was pinned to the wall in front of me stating, “Beware fixers.” My husband explained that fixers are people who are paid to take your place in situations just such as this, and who go through the tedious lines and hoops for you while you stay at home or work in air-conditioned comfort. Sounded like a great idea!

“They’re illegal,” Steve said, bursting my rising bubble of hope.

I still wondered why we…

Which is better and Why? Acceptance OR Tolerance

acceptance , awareness , divine , love , strength , thoughts , tolerance , unconditional love

love and spirituality Guidance's avatarLove and spirituality Guidance

Tolerance is a virtue. We all know that. But virtues can be a bit tough to imbibe and tolerance also needs a huge dose of patience.

What is tolerance and why is tolerance a virtue?

Tolerance finds a balance between indulgence—anything goes—and narrow-mindedness.

The book “The Truth about Tolerance” describes ten “truths of tolerance”. Few are paraphrased here:

  1. Tolerance is a patience toward a practice or opinion you disapprove of— Tolerance is being agreeable—listening carefully and treating the person with dignity and respect—while you disagree. You continue a critical analysis of all you know and believe to be true, in light of the different viewpoint expressed by the person you disagree with.
  1. Tolerance is the virtue that makes peace possible—Tolerance allows people the liberty and personal freedom of self-determination. Toleration promotes the free exchange of ideas, including criticism and debate of public policy in the interest of…
